The Drug Discovery & Development process can be divided into two phases. First, there is the discovery phase, consisting of target discovery, lead finding, and lead optimization. This is followed by the development phase. Our research group focuses particularly on projects in the first phase.

Alpha-Helical Spiro Scaffolds (project ASPPIRe)

In this NWO project, we are developing a new technology for medicines. Through computational modeling, the synthesis of libraries of spirocyclic compounds, and screening for biological activity, new molecules are identified that could form the basis for future medicines.

REBORN

Bone-strengthening medications for osteoporosis and cancer have side effects that can damage the jaw, which can lead to major problems. In this project, REBORN, an innovative gel is being developed that helps the body repair lost bone and fights infections.

Access gates to the cell

With this research project, we hope to better understand how transport proteins influence the success of cancer therapy. With this knowledge, treatments can be designed more specifically, made more effective, and it may also be possible to better predict who will benefit from these therapies.

Alpha-Helical Spiro Scaffolds (project ASPPIRe)

In dit NWO project ontwikkelen we een nieuwe technologie voor geneesmiddelen. Door middel van computationele modellering, het synthetiseren van bibliotheken met spirocyclische verbindingen en het screenen op biologische activiteit worden nieuwe moleculen geïdentificeerd die de basis zouden kunnen vormen voor toekomstige geneesmiddelen.

REBORN

Botversterkende medicijnen voor osteoporose en kanker hebben bijwerkingen waardoor de kaak kan beschadigen, wat kan leiden tot grote problemen. In dit project, REBORN, ontwikkelen we een innovatieve gel die het lichaam helpt het verloren bot te herstellen en infecties bestrijdt.

Met dit onderzoek hopen we beter te begrijpen hoe transporteiwitten het succes van kankertherapie beïnvloeden. Met die kennis kunnen we behandelingen gerichter ontwerpen, effectiever maken, en kan mogelijk ook beter worden voorspeld wie baat heeft bij deze therapieën.

Pivot Park Oss

The Drug Discovery research group has labs available in Nijmegen but also at Pivot Park in Oss. Pivot Park and HAN work together intensively since 2021. With the arrival of the research group, the life science campus aims to solve common issues in the field of drug research.

Conversely, the research group offers students and lecturers of the School of Applied Biosciences and Chemistry a ‘hybrid learning environment’. Here, they can learn and conduct research in practice.
