Lean Engineering in a nutshell
Lean Engineering is a full-time track that runs for 3 semesters (18 months). You follow a series of practice-based modules and conclude with a graduation project. The track is part of the Master in Engineering Systems, so for some modules you join students from other tracks of this master.
Semester 1 is about systems modelling and applied control. In semester 2 you have two electives from Proces Development, Product Development and Big Data & Small Data
Semester 3 is all about your graduation project. Here you investigate a real-life problem in an industrial or research setting.
Systems Modelling and Applied Control
Semester 1 starts with the modules Systems Modelling and Applied Control. Apply your knowledge straight away during labs and real-life projects for lean engineering. And fine-tune your communication and research skills.
Modules in 1st semester
In Systems Modelling, you learn to model and validate systems with multiple inputs and outputs. How? Using white-box modelling and system identification. In Applied Control you learn how to analyze a system or model.
The academic year runs from September to August. In that time you have 42 weeks of education. The rest of the time you have holidays.
Modules and lecture days
Here you can find a weekly schedule of all the modules for the Master Engineering Systems in semester 1 and 2. This includes the modules for the Lean Engineering track.
In the 2nd semester you choose 2 track-specific modules. In the Lean Engineering track you choose from Big Data and Small Data, Lean Process Development and Lean Product Development.
In Big Data and Small Data you get the skills to make models of complex and non-linear systems. In Lean Process Development you learn to apply lean principles and methods for the design, operational control and improvement of manufacturing processes. Lean Product Development is about applying lean principles and methods in the design and improvement of products.
Project on lean processes or products
Your 3rd and final semester is devoted to your graduation project. That’s where you investigate a Lean process or product issue. Where? At a company or research institute.
The graduation project is a final test of your ability to manage a project. And where you demonstrate your skills in communicating, reporting and presenting. You get the support of a HAN staff member and a supervisor from the company or institute.
