The Embedded Systems program has come about in close collaboration with our industry partners. They also provide projects for you to tackle as part of the program. This ensures your knowledge and skills are in line with industry needs.
Embedded Systems in a nutshell
The full-time Embedded Systems master track runs for 1.5 years (3 semesters). You follow 4 practical modules and conclude with a major project. Embedded Systems is part of the Master in Engineering Systems. So for some modules you join students from other engineering tracks.
Semester 1 covers Systems Modeling and Applied Control. In semester 2 you choose 2 elective modules from Big Data and Small Data, Advanced Controller Design and Distributed Systems. Semester 3 is all about your major project. Here you investigate an issue related to embedded systems at a company or research institute.
Systems Modeling and Applied Control
In semester 1 you get started with 2 compulsory modules: systems modeling and applied control. Knowledge is immediately applied during labs and real-life projects for industry. Also important: you brush up on your communication and research skills.
In Systems Modeling you learn how to model systems using the white-box model. Applied Control is about analyzing a system or model.
The academic year runs from September to August. In that time you have 42 weeks of education. The rest of the time you have holidays.

Here you can find a weekly schedule of all the modules for the Master Engineering Systems in semester 1 and 2. This includes the modules for the Embedded Systems track.
In the 2nd semester you delve more specifically into embedded systems. And projects play an important role in this semester as well.
Modules in 2nd semester
In semester 2 you choose 2 elective modules. There are 3 on offer. In the module Big Data & Small Data you learn all about black-box modelling. Advanced Controller Design is a module where you learn to create a controller. An advanced controller, because it can deal with varying conditions. In the module Distributed Systems, real-time behavior is the key.

Embedded systems project
Your 3rd and final semester of your master degree. Here you devote your energy to your major project. You investigate a real-life issue related to embedded systems. Where? At an industrial company or research institute.
During the graduation project, your skills in managing a project will be put to the test. Likewise with your skills in communicating, reporting and presenting. A HAN staff member and a supervisor from the company supports you throughout.
Master of Science
After 1.5 years of study you’ve earned your Master of Science in Engineering Systems. Congratulations! The program you've completed is accredited by the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). That means you now have an internationally recognized degree. One journey has ended, but the next begins: your career working with embedded systems.
