International projects of the HAN

The HAN University of Applied Sciences participates in many international projects.

Theewaterskloof Project

In May 2003 the HAN University of Applied Sciences and the University of the Western Cape agreed to establish a community development project in Theewaterskloof Municipality (SA) as part of their bilateral co-operation.

The idea of the project is to give students from both universities valuable service learning experiences. At the same time, the region and the local communities will benefit from the project activities. These activities focus on social and economic development in rural areas. The main aim is to develop small businesses that will help people support their families and become self-sufficient.

Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the project, all departments of both universities are involved in carrying out project activities, teaching or research. Some results have already been achieved. Women in the informal settlement Rooi Dakke were able to use government money to restore a community arts and crafts centre. In this community centre they worked together with HAN students to produce and market their products.

Tanzania Project

A number of lecturers of the Faculty of Business and Management of HAN University of Applies Sciences participate in a NPT project in Tanzania since 2007. The aim of this project sponsored by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to assist the College of Business Education in Dar es Salaam in making the transition to applying competence based and modular curricula. Over the past months, an enthusiastic team of senior lecturers has visited the College in Tanzania multiple times providing teacher training and consultancy in restructuring existing curricula and adapting these where needed.

Vietnam Project

HAN University of Applied Sciences has been involved as a consortium partner in a project funded by the Dutch Government in Vietnam, through the Nuffic-NPT channel. The project’s main aim is to strengthen higher education in Vietnam by trying to achieve a better level of competition with other countries in the region.

To achieve this the project focuses at the development of Quality Assurance Systems at 5 universities through the establishment of Quality Assurance Centres and at the development of a Quality Assurance system in Higher Education. The project activities include workshops and training on the job, study visits, conferences, development of a higher education quality assurance framework, instruments, procedures and protocols and piloting with institutional implementation.
