Programma Introduction to Process Control

For different types of processes, the concept of process gain and process dynamics will be explained. Subsequently, the principle of feedback control will be explained as well as the importance of static and dynamic process characteristics in controller tuning.

Controller tuning of some important control loops will be reviewed: a level control loop, a flow control loop and a temperature control loop. The participant will use Matlab Simulink to gain experience in tuning these loops after the key differences in dynamic behaviour have been identified.
The difference between tuning for setpoint changes and disturbances will be explained. The last part of the course deals with single loop enhancements: cascade control, feed-forward control, ratio control and inferential control.
