Course overview

Life Sciences is a 4 years bachelor education. After completion, the student is awarded the title 'Bachelor of Applied Sciences'.

4 years

The first year is a foundation course. It's purpose is to determine if a student is suitable for the profession and/or if the education is appealing.

The main period takes 3 years and consists of

  • 3 semesters of education internally at HAN University of Applied Sciences
  • 1 semester external work placement
  • 1 semester external work placement/graduation assignment
  • and a minor programme of 1 semester

HAN University of Applied Sciences provides the educational programme in English and also in Dutch. The English programme is called 'Life Sciences' and the Dutch programme 'Biologie en Medisch Laboratoriumonderzoek'. Both programmes are identical.

Special skills and knowledge

The Bachelor program 'Life Sciences' has been specifically designed to meet global demand for laboratory scientists with the necessary special skills and knowledge to perform professionally in their field of expertise. Our graduates have started successful careers in international research centres, universities around the world, research centres in hospitals and in the pharmaceutical industry. Their employers rate HAN University of Applied Sciences as one of the best, and the laboratory department as the best in the Netherlands.

Subjects

The Life Sciences program focuses on the following subjects:

  • Cell-biology
  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Molecular genetics
  • Bioinformatics
  • Immunology
  • Physiology of plants and animals
  • Communication Skills (written and oral)
  • Research strategies

Education is student-centred and is organized along characteristic issues and skills required for a lab career.

Our academic year

Our academic years are divided into four periods/terms (starting in September, ending in June). Examinations at the end of each of these 8 week periods help you determine how far you have got and where you need to improve. Student project results are presented at the end of each period to examiners in the form of student reports and presentations.

Life Sciences takes 4 years in total and during this entire period our students are coached and advised by members of the Faculty staff in order to achieve the best results.
