Visa

If you are a foreign student wishing to study in the Netherlands you might need a visa. This depends on your nationality and the length of time you wish to stay in the Netherlands.

Stay of up to 3 months

For a stay of up to 3 months, you might need a short stay visa (Visum Kort Verblijf, VKV). This depends on your nationality. You have to apply for a short stay visa in person at the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country.

Stay of longer than 3 months

Students staying in the Netherlands for longer than 3 months need a residence permit (Verblijfsvergunning, VVR). Upon your arrival in the Netherlands, HAN International Office will apply for your residence permit (Verblijfsvergunning, VVR).

You may also need a provisional residence permit (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf, MVV) to enter the country. This depends on your nationality. Citizens of the EU/EEA and Switzerland, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Vatican City, Monaco or South Korea do not need a provisional residence permit (MVV) to enter the Netherlands.

You cannot apply for an MVV yourself – the HAN International Office will apply for it on your behalf. The MVV is a sticker placed in your passport at the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country.
